Santa Barbara, California / United States

A Coalition-listed Santa Barbara surf club with county-club roots, a 1988 revival and documented competition and clean-water history.

The club story.

Noozhawk's August 2009 account dates Santa Barbara County Surf Club to 1960 and describes hibernation in the early 1970s. A new Santa Barbara Surf Club emerged in 1988, dropping County from its name while retaining the earlier decal tradition. It names Andy Neumann, Gary Ross, Craig Angell, Shawn White, Dick Lovell and Jeff Kruthers in that revival. Current legal continuity and operating status need confirmation. The modern SBC Boardriders identity is not merged into this profile.

Membership & community.

The 2009 account reported $30 individual and $40 family annual dues and meetings on the last Thursday at a Santa Barbara pizza restaurant. Those are dated historical terms, not current pricing, a meeting invitation or open enrollment. The Coalition still lists SBSC.

Noozhawk records beach cleanups at Bates Beach, Leadbetter and Rincon, Highway 101 adoption in some years, and participation in the Groundswell Society Rincon Cleanwater Classic from 1997 to 2006. It reports Surf Club Division wins from 2003 to 2006 and clean-water fundraising. These are historical programs.

The beach & break.

Santa Barbara coast / historical Hollister Ranch ties

The county predecessor had an agreement with the Hollister family for Ranch surfing. Historical sources disagree on membership caps across different periods, so no old rule is presented as current. A former club agreement is not public or present-day access permission. Santa Barbara coastal ties, including cleanup locations, do not establish one current home break. Access, launch point and parking: confirm before visiting.

Contests & events.

The 2009 account records SBSC winning the 2007 MSA Classic team title, tying for third in Coalition standings that year, and tying for second in 2008. It reports 92 different club members competed during 2007. These are dated results rather than a current roster or schedule.

Athletes & heritage.

Renny Yater was the county predecessor first president; early members included Arlen Knight, John Bradbury and George Greenough. Noozhawk names Debbie Trauntvein as president in 2009 and several earlier presidents. Those roles are historical, not current appointments.
