The club story.
The club history traces an informal organization to 1951 and a first formal meeting led by Dr. Barney Wilkes on April 24, 1952. Andre Jahan prepared bylaws and helped negotiate access with the Marine Corps. The club later lost exclusive access responsibilities as the beach became public, but members voted against disbanding in 1973. Its account records membership above 1,000 in 2002; that historic figure is not a current membership count.
Membership & community.
The current shop lists 2026 calendar-year membership at $25, covering January 1 through December 31, 2026. It includes one membership card and two pre-numbered decals, not stickers; tidebooks are no longer included. Membership supports beach preservation rather than granting private ownership of a public beach.
The 2026 president letter describes volunteers helping with road maintenance, Shack repairs and bamboo removal at State Parks request. The club supports the San Onofre Parks Foundation and engages with Surfrider on beach protection. Family Day, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments bring generations together. San Onofre Surf Beach / Old Mans
The club identifies San Onofre Surf Beach as its home community and Old Mans as the published 2026 board-meeting location, weather permitting.
