Half Moon Bay, California / United States

A Coastside youth surf-team community offering high-school and middle-school competition, built around showing up and being kind.

The club story.

The current site says the organization was formerly the Half Moon Bay Surf Team and uses the Red Triangle name to align with the Red Triangle Boardriders Club. Marty Phelps biography dates co-founding of the Half Moon Bay High School Surf Team and Surf Club to 2007. This establishes predecessor history, not the exact Red Triangle rebrand date or that the youth team and boardriders organization are one legal entity.

Membership & community.

The 2026-2027 homepage says there will be no separate Club team this year, only competitive middle-school and high-school teams for boys and girls. It lists July 1 registration opening and September 1 closing, but the page footer still says registration is open. Those conflict as of October 2, 2026; current entry availability and dues: confirm directly. Applicants need independent paddling, wave-catching and ocean comfort, with additional published grade/skill requirements per team.

The current mission creates a safe, fun and fulfilling experience for competitive surfers of all abilities and family members. Parent and community volunteers coach and support progression. The emphasis is on youth participation and kindness, not a verified scholarship or charitable grant program.

The beach & break.

Half Moon Bay practice spots / SCSSL contest breaks

The team pages say most practices are at various Half Moon Bay surf spots, generally one or two per week depending on conditions. Scholastic contests are described at Steamer Lane, Pleasure Point, Manresa and The Hook. These are circuit locations, not one exclusive home break. Actual practice beach, safety instructions and next check-in: obtain from the coach.

Published area: Half Moon Bay, CA 94019.

Contests & events.

The official site describes competition in the Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League against Aptos, Marin and Santa Cruz teams, with a typical August-to-February season and five contests. The 2026-2027 homepage lists September assessment, first practice and first contest dates, now past or needing confirmation; no future event is inferred from them.
