Newport Beach, California / United States

A source-listed Newport Beach surfing association with a documented history of beach-access advocacy and competitive shortboarding.

The club story.

John Burton's September 2009 Daily Pilot column describes the 1960s NBSA forming against anti-surfing city policy. It names John Lindsey, Gordon Connolly, Terry Smith and Herb Torrens as organizers and Lindsey as first president. It says the club dissolved around the 1970s. The Coalition still lists NBSA, and a club-named blog describes invitation-only shortboarding. This profile is not assumed identical to Newport Beach Boardriders.

Membership & community.

A post under the name Newport Beach Surfing Association identifies Mandy Jacobsen as secretary and public liaison, and describes invitation-only membership for advanced shortboard surfers. Its content date and current role are unverified. That does not establish present enrollment.

The 2009 account documents organized city council attendance, letters and proposals to protect surf access and improve the public image of surfers. This is dated advocacy, not evidence of an active campaign.

The beach & break.

Newport Beach / historical 22nd Street era

The historical account places the association in Newport Beach's beach-access debate and references 22nd Street history. No exclusive access or present rights are inferred from the old campaign.

Contests & events.

The historical column describes United States Surfing Association-era competition but gives no current NBSA calendar. A Coalition listing confirms the source-listed name, not a 2026 entry.
