Long Beach, California / United States

A Long Beach surf-club tradition documented through early California surf competition and later Coalition longboard events.

The club story.

The 562's April 2019 report dates the California club to 1938. Ian Lind's family photograph archive documents the club organizing the First National Surfing Championship on November 13, 1938, using John M. Lind's personal collection. Continuity between the original club and the present legal entity is not established. The same-named New York organization is not this California profile.

Membership & community.

The Coalition lists Long Beach among its West Coast clubs. A current California club-operated membership page, dues schedule, joining process, age limits and meeting calendar were not verified. Historical event participation does not prove membership is open.

The 1938 archive documents a community competition, and the 2019 local report places the team among 23 Coalition clubs. Those sources support a competition tradition but do not name current charities, scholarships, cleanups or funds raised.

The beach & break.

Long Beach historical contest / San Onofre competition ties

The 1938 event was between Pine Avenue Pier and the Long Beach Pike before the breakwater was completed. The 2019 Coalition event was at Church in San Onofre State Beach. These are dated venues, not a promise of present surf conditions, club access or a current practice break.

Contests & events.

The 562 reported fifth place out of 23 teams at the April 2019 Gathering of the Tribes, hosted by Doheny Longboard Surfing Association at Church. The 1938 photo archive records the earlier national championship. Neither is a current calendar.
