La Jolla, California / United States

A La Jolla Shores community club whose history centers on surf access, ocean care, youth contests and local participation.

The club story.

The official About page traces informal origins to the late 1960s and early 1970s, followed by a longboard-focused revival in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It records a formal dues-paying revival in 1996 and a 2004 name change to La Jolla Shores Surfing Association to include shortboarders, longboarders, families and all ages. Its130-plus membership figure belongs to the earlier revival account, not a verified current count.

Membership & community.

The published Join page welcomes people interested in La Jolla Shores and the ocean, regardless of surfing ability, and asks for a current-member sponsor on the application. It links an application and mailing instructions. Current dues, active application processing, meeting dates, current president and benefits: confirm directly because much of the site contains older material.

The mission describes local planning participation, contests, beach parties, cleanups and charitable donations when funds permit. Its Events page documents a pandemic-era Youth Surf Art Contest, with Rena Kabler as grand-prize winner, in place of a canceled Menehune Surf Contest. That archive is not an active application window or a 2026 charity promise.

The beach & break.

La Jolla Shores

The history identifies The Shores as home break and records work with San Diego lifeguards and city officials to preserve surfing there. These are documented access efforts, not proof of current surf-zone boundaries or private club control.

Published mailing address: P.O. Box 1281, La Jolla, CA 92038. Confirm before mailing an application; it is not a beach meeting point.

Contests & events.

The homepage still announces a pandemic-related Menehune contest cancellation and refunds. The Events page discusses the substitute surf-art contest. Treat both as archived notices rather than current cancellations or refund rights.

Athletes & heritage.

The Team page names Kevin Connelly, Lorraine Schmalenberger, Stephanie Hoffman and other surfers, while citing a 2010 Connelly result and a 2016 team photograph. Those are published heritage ties, not a confirmed current squad. The About page also carries an undated officers panel; current leadership and selected riders need confirmation.

Sponsors.

The mission names civic and ocean-planning relationships. That is not a verified commercial sponsor roster. Historic art-contest prizes and named surfers do not establish current sponsorship.

No Famous affiliation or endorsement is implied.
