The surf program.

The HB surf-team website describes a progression from a club to recognized student-athletes in 1975, a first national title in 1981 and an eighteenth national title in 2018. Those are the program website's historical account, not newly verified founding records. A district news post separately links coverage of the 2018 national title. The 2026 NSSA results provide later competition evidence.

Los Angeles Times reporting on May 6, 1997 says the school's first surf club started in 1967. This is the club origin, distinct from later athletic recognition and competitive-team milestones. Dated origin source

Joining & eligibility.

The program website offers a contact form for interest in the program. That is not proof of open tryouts, an available place or current eligibility. School enrollment, athletic clearance and competitive selection remain separate.

Community & support.

The team website describes school and coastal surfing traditions and offers a 2023 program publication through local businesses and the surf museum. Distribution of a publication is not proof those businesses currently sponsor the team.

The beach & safety.

The history is rooted in Huntington Beach, but a city identity does not establish a public practice meeting point. The 2026 NSSA event pages name Seaside Reef for state competition and Salt Creek for nationals. These are event venues, not permanent home breaks. Current practices, transport, access, parking and adult supervision need school confirmation.

Contests & results.

The 2026 NSSA state table records third in varsity with 57 points and fifth in junior varsity with 34. Nationals record third in varsity with 77 and third in junior varsity with 48. Squads are retained within one school profile.

Coaches & school ties.

The team history names Bill Garland, Bruce Gabrielson, Rob Hill, Chuck Allen and Andy Verdone in historical coaching roles. The school Boys Sports page still lists Andy Verdone as head coach when checked October 4, 2026. A May 13, 2026 Los Angeles Times report announced his pending retirement and said assistant Ian Dominelli would take over the following season. These sources disagree about the present appointment.
