Hope Ranch / Santa Barbara, California / United States
A Santa Barbara surf-club tradition with early invitational competition, a 1996 revival and documented recent Malibu participation.
The club story.
Andy Neumann's personal account in Santa Barbara Magazine describes a pre-existing junior-high and high-school Hope Ranch club that Jim Hansen redirected toward the 1963 Malibu Invitational. Neumann became president at 16. He records a later dormant period and a 1996 revival by James O'Mahoney, Andrew Buck, Franky Morales and Wayne Rich. This is not automatically the Santa Barbara Surf Club or modern SBC Boardriders.
Membership & community.
The Coalition lists HRSC, and the MSA names it among invited clubs for its 2025 Classic. Neither listing establishes open membership or an approved current application. The early teenage group, later competition team and revived club represent different phases.
Neumann recalls public-service cards intended to improve the reputation of surfers in the early 1960s. The magazine credits archival photographs to Hope Ranch Surf Club and documents an ongoing cultural connection to Santa Barbara shaping and competition. These are historical community ties, not proof of current scholarship or cleanup programs.
The beach & break.
Santa Barbara coast / historical Malibu and Rincon events
The historical club drew from the Santa Barbara coast. Neumann documents Malibu invitational competition and a planned Rincon contest in 1966 that was canceled for lack of surf. Hope Ranch beach association does not grant visitors private access or membership access today. Current home break, permitted meetup point and water-safety rules need club confirmation.
Official beach guideContests & events.
The MSA official 2025 Classic page names Hope Ranch among invited clubs for September 6-7, 2025. The magazine records the 1965 West Coast Club Championship and a 2021 70-and-over Legends win by Neumann at Malibu. These are past participation and results, not a future calendar.

Athletes & heritage.
The magazine names Jim Hansen, Andy Neumann and successor president John Bradbury in the early club story. Noozhawk records a 1965 team that included Renny Yater, Shaun Claffey and Denny Aaberg, with women including Kathy Beck and Terri Gillard. The historical roster reproduced here is not a current team list.
Athlete / archive sourceSponsors.
Neumann identifies Renny Yater, Jeff White, John Eichert and Doctor Bittleston as early sponsors and mentors. Their historical support does not establish current commercial contracts. The reproduced roster heading is an archival club mark from a magazine, not a verified current logo.
