The surf program.

The official school says HAAS received its charter in 2001. Its linked athletics page distinguishes a school-hours surf elective, summer/fall surf club and February-May BIIF team. May 9, 2026 West Hawaii Today reporting describes a long-running ocean education program and Honua Finals participation. School founding is not silently labeled the competitive teams founding.

The school-linked athletics page distinguishes separate class and club physical forms from the BIIF sports packet, academic eligibility and Junior Lifeguard certification. It also contains a registration deadline written as Friday, December 14 without a usable year, so that deadline is not promoted as current. The linked page redirected to sign-in during browser review; its fetched public text is treated as published information needing operator confirmation, not proof of open enrollment. May 2026 reporting describes oceanography, weather and marine science learning in surf class, and help from the Honolii surfing community after the loss of the earlier break. This is dated educational and community context, not a guaranteed class placement or current volunteer opportunity.

The beach & safety.

May reporting says the 2018 eruption removed access to the former Pohoiki surf break and the program adapted by traveling to Honolii. That history does not establish todays authorized meetup or safe travel plan. The May state event was at Hookipa Beach on Maui. Current class versus team location, transport, access, adult supervision and ocean-safety decisions: confirm through the school.

Contests & results.

Liveheats lists HAAS Boys (BIIF) with 2,300 points and Girls (BIIF) with 488 at the May 1-2, 2026 event. May reporting describes boys longboard and bodyboard individual state titles; individual wins are not a school team championship. Separate boys and girls entries are not combined into a new school score, and the club leaderboard is not mislabeled official team standings.

Coaches & school ties.

May 9 reporting names Pono Hirakami as head coach, assisted by Denim Cretton and Rebecca Brink. HHSAA still lists Steven Hirakami as principal and athletic director, while the same reporting says the founding director died in November 2025. That conflict is explicit: the directory is not offered as a verified current contact. Confirm appointments through the live school route. The official HAAS school wordmark is used.
