South Bay, California / United States

A South Bay surf club preserving local surf history, supporting coastal conservation and bringing generations together through competition and community.

The club story.

The official site dates the club to 1963. Mike Purpus's October 2019 Easy Reader account names founders John Baker, Alfred Laws and Tommy Griffiths, describes early meetings at Hermosa's Clark Stadium and records Frankie Edwards as an early president. The same historical account credits Eddie Solt and Shawn O'Brien with a later revival.

Membership & community.

Membership is invitation-only: an active member sponsors the applicant, who completes an application and attends a general membership interview before Board review. The official application lists first-year dues of $100 adult / $50 minor. The undated bylaws list $35 annual renewal, a January-December term and a post-July joining provision. Confirm which rate applies before paying. Under-18 members need parent or guardian approval. These are club dues, not Famous benefits.

The club mission includes South Bay youth, coastal protection and a positive image of surfers through charity and competition. Its bylaws call for an annual contest to raise money for member-nominated local charities. The website describes the organization as a 501(c)(3), tax ID 82-4892945; this profile is not a tax or live registration-status determination.

The beach & break.

South Bay / Hermosa Beach contest history

The official mission centers South Bay surf history. The 2019 Easy Reader account documents the Hermosa Beach Hotdogger Championships at Hermosa pier and early Hermosa meetings. The bylaws list a Redondo Beach principal office that the Board may change. None of this proves a current practice venue, exclusive break access or an open meeting address.

Contests & events.

The bylaws provide for an annual charity surfing contest, but the public News page inspected contains 2018 and 2019 posts, not a dated current calendar. The October 2019 Easy Reader account reports the Fourth Annual Hermosa Beach Hotdogger Championships with over 100 competitors.

Athletes & heritage.

Its revival account names Eddie Solt, Shawn O'Brien, Cormac O'Brien, Dave Schafer, Joey Lombardo, Jiro Ikeda and Brendan Simmons. These are published historical ties, not a verified current team or Famous endorsements.
